Taking control of your time and improve your health, Pulse is a personal fitness booking app that allows users to manage and book their fitness classes and workouts. As the lead product designer at Pulse, I was responsible for building the app's user experience and making it useful for users. I initiated the project by defining the problem statement, which focused on the challenges faced by fitness enthusiasts in discovering and booking suitable fitness classes. Through research and analysis, I identified key pain points and opportunities for improvement.

This project involved the creation of a user-centered UI/UX design for a fitness class booking app. The goal was to design an intuitive and visually appealing interface that enables users to easily find, book, and manage fitness classes. The project encompassed various stages, including problem statement formulation, user persona development, user interviews, user flows creation, branding and wireframe design, prototype development, and the establishment of a design system.

User Interviews Summary

I conducted user interviews to gather insights directly from the target audience. These interviews allowed me to understand their preferences, behaviors, and pain points related to fitness class booking. The findings from these interviews informed the design process and helped prioritize features and functionalities.

I applied the design thinking process to create solutions built on user research & testing. The end product was a result of rounds of iteration particularly in the Ideation phase. First off, let’s start from the very beginning…

Problem Statement

I initiated the project by defining the problem statement, which focused on the challenges faced by fitness enthusiasts in discovering and booking suitable fitness classes. Through research and analysis, I identified key pain points and opportunities for improvement.

Limited options

Mollitia delectus labore voluptatem.

Lack of flexibility

Existing gyms primarily offer fixed memberships limited to specific locations, which can be inconvenient for individuals who frequently travel or wish to explore different fitness classes in various towns, cities or countries.

Inefficient utilization of fitness resources

Gyms and fitness studios often have empty slots or underutilized capacity in their classes, leading to missed opportunities for revenue generation and wastage of resources.

Point-based booking system

There is a need for a simplified and universal point-based booking system that allows users to book fitness and gym classes anywhere in the world, using a flexible point system instead of being restricted to a specific gym or fitness studio.

Difficulty in managing multiple fitness memberships

Individuals who desire to explore fitness classes across multiple locations face challenges in managing multiple memberships and subscriptions, resulting in administrative burden and potential overspending.

Limited social interaction and networking opportunities

The absence of a centralized platform connecting fitness enthusiasts from different locations limits the opportunities for social interaction, community-building, and sharing of fitness experiences.

2nd Usability Summary Main issues Lack of education around features in the onboarding. Using the same components for different actions (time cards not clickable in listing view, while same cards are clickable in date filter and other components). Lack of interaction and system feedback. Lack of accessibility of the wallet section in the feed. ‍

I transformed the wireframes into an interactive prototype using industry-standard design tools. The prototype allowed stakeholders to experience the app's functionality and flow firsthand, facilitating feedback and iteration.

Results and Impact Greater autonomy & Less frustration when booking a class With two new happy flows, users will now have the choice of 1. searching by location straight from the homepage or 2. selecting filters directly from the search page. The new simplified process will save users time and improve user satisfaction, both of which I believe will strengthen the brand and increase the retention rate.
